Louisville is the best program in the country that hasn’t won it all yet. The Cardinals reached the national title match in 2022 and again in 2024, losing to Texas and then Penn State, and they made three Final Fours in four seasons from 2021 to 2024. The 2024 final was played on their own city’s biggest floor, the KFC Yum! Center. After Dani Busboom Kelly left for Nebraska, longtime associate head coach Dan Meske took over in 2025. This fall the Cards are 18–2, unbeaten in the ACC, and ranked No. 3.

The near-misses: 2021, 2022, and 2024

Three seasons built Louisville’s national reputation. The postseason history page has every result below.

Season Record How it ended
2021 32–1 Lost the national semifinal to Wisconsin 2–3 in Columbus, Ohio, after 32 straight wins
2022 31–3 Beat Pitt 3–2 in the semifinal in Omaha, then lost the title match to Texas 0–3
2024 30–6 Beat Pitt 3–1 in the semifinal at home, then lost the title match to Penn State 1–3

For where these runs fit in the sport’s history, see the Final Four history primer.

How Louisville got here

Louisville has played volleyball since 1976, and the school’s history and records page lists a 1,118–510 all-time record through 2025. The program went to the NCAA tournament nearly every year from 1990 on, but deep runs were rare.

Era Coach Highlights (school records)
1976–79 Susan Johns Program’s first four seasons
1980–84 Scott Luster First NCAA tournament in 1982 (lost at UCLA)
1985–87 Bob McCarthy
1988–95 Don Hardin Six straight NCAA trips, 1990–95
1996–2010 Leonid Yelin Four Sweet 16s (1996, 1998, 2004, 2005); 30–3 in 2004 and 31–3 in 2005
2011–16 Anne Kordes 30–4 in 2012
2017–24 Dani Busboom Kelly Three Final Fours, two title matches, 30-plus wins in 2021, 2022, and 2024
2025– Dan Meske 26–7 and a Sweet 16 in his first season

The turning point was the 2019 tournament. Louisville upset Texas 3–2 in Austin to reach its first Elite Eight, then lost to Minnesota, per the postseason table. Two years later it was in the Final Four.

The coaching handoff

Busboom Kelly left after the 2024 season to take over at Nebraska, which named her head coach on Jan. 29, 2025 (see our Nebraska profile). Louisville promoted from within two days later.

Per his bio, Dan Meske is the eighth head coach in program history and holds the endowed title of Dan and Maria Durbin Head Volleyball Coach. His background:

His first season (2025): 26–7. As a No. 2 seed, Louisville beat Loyola Chicago and Marquette at home, then led Texas A&M two sets to none in the Lincoln regional semifinal before losing in five. A&M went on to win the national title; our Texas A&M profile covers that run. The bio says the 2025 team led the country in total blocks (386.5).

Where Louisville plays

L&N Federal Credit Union Arena is the regular home. The school’s arena page says it was originally Cardinal Arena, got a major renovation in the summer of 2017, and was renamed on April 18, 2019. It is a volleyball-only building, which the school calls a rare setup, and the first volleyball win there came on Aug. 31, 1991, against Morehead State. Before that, Louisville played at Manual Gym from 1977 to 1990.

The KFC Yum! Center is the 22,000-seat downtown arena, per the arena page, and Louisville also played home matches there from 2011 to 2016. On the 2026 schedule, the Cards play Missouri (Sept. 9, already played), Georgia Tech (Nov. 1), and the regular-season finale against SMU (Nov. 28) there.

A few things stand out:

What’s next (subject to change, times ET as the school lists them): at Florida State (Fri. Oct. 23, 6 p.m., ACCNX), at Miami (Oct. 25), Clemson (Oct. 30), Georgia Tech at the KFC Yum! Center (Nov. 1), at Virginia (Nov. 6), at Virginia Tech (Nov. 8), at SMU (Nov. 12), at Pittsburgh (Nov. 15), Wake Forest (Nov. 20), NC State on Senior Day (Nov. 22), at North Carolina (Nov. 25), and SMU at the KFC Yum! Center (Nov. 28). Selection Sunday is Nov. 29, per NCAA.com.

By the numbers

The team numbers come from our Daily Desk pull of NCAA.com statistics, published Oct. 19 and covering 66 sets through the North Carolina match. The player lines in that pull ran through the Stanford match (18 matches), so they don’t include last weekend.

Team stat Louisville Where that sits
Hitting % .319 3rd of 343 DI teams in our pull
Opponent hitting % .151 8th
Hitting differential +.168 2nd
Kills per set 14.27 6th
Blocks per set 2.98 6th
Kill % .419 16th
Player Pos. Line (through Oct. 11)
Chloe Chicoine OH, Sr. 233 kills, .325 hitting, 3.88 kills per set
Kalyssa Blackshear OPP, So. 213 kills on .358 hitting
Brooke Bultema MB, Sr. 123 kills on .394 hitting, 65 blocks
Addison Makun MB, So. 70 blocks
Nayelis Cabello S, Jr. 605 assists
Payton Petersen OH/L, Jr. 249 digs, 4.15 per set

In plain terms, Louisville wins both halves of the game. Only one team in our pull has a bigger gap between its own hitting and its opponents’. The school’s own notes say the same thing in their numbers: through 18 matches, Louisville ranked third nationally in hitting and led the ACC in opponent hitting, per the preview. The block is a program habit; the 2024 and 2025 teams also ranked at or near the top of the country in blocks, per the Meske bio.

In our side-out vs. point-scoring breakdown through Oct. 18, Louisville ranked 3rd in DI in both: it sided out 67.8% of the time and won 48.6% of its own serves, against DI averages of about 57% and 43%. Only Nebraska was better at both. New to these numbers? Start with hitting percentage, opponent hitting % and differential, and digs, blocks, and aces.

Why Louisville matters to fans

  1. It’s the clearest “next first-time champion” story. Two title matches in three years and no banner yet. If you follow one program for the drama, this is it. See our best programs overview.
  2. It survived a coaching change at the top. Plenty of programs slide after a star coach leaves. Louisville promoted the associate who helped build it, made a Sweet 16 in year one, and is 18–2 in year two.
  3. The Bluegrass rivalry. Louisville and Kentucky have both been top-five teams this fall, and their Sept. 20 match was the first top-five volleyball match ever played at Kentucky’s Memorial Coliseum, per our Kentucky profile.
  4. The ACC race. With no conference tournament, every league match counts toward the title. Louisville’s Nov. 15 trip to Pitt and its Nov. 25 rematch at North Carolina are the ones to circle. See our conferences guide.

How recruits and parents should use this page

  1. Fit over banners. Final Fours don’t create a roster spot at your position this cycle. Start with the recruiting timeline and the Eligibility Center steps.
  2. Use the official channels. Start from the Louisville roster and staff page, not third-party DMs promising to “get you seen.” Our how to email a college coach guide covers the first message.
  3. Know the roster math. The 2026 roster lists 17 players. DI rosters at opt-in schools are capped at 18; our walk-on guide and scholarship types guide explain what that means.
  4. Portal reality. The team’s leading attacker, Chicoine, came from Purdue. See the transfer portal guide before you assume a program recruits only from high school.
  5. Ask about the block. If you’re a middle, ask any staff how they train blocking. Louisville’s numbers over the last three seasons suggest this one has a real answer.
