Florida has one of the deepest résumés in college volleyball without a national title. Under Mary Wise, the Gators won 987 matches in 34 seasons, made eight Final Fours, and played for the championship twice, losing to USC in 2003 and Nebraska in 2017. Wise’s last season was 2024. Ryan Theis, who was a Florida assistant in 2006 and 2007, took over in 2025. In his second season the Gators are 15–2, have beaten Kentucky, Texas A&M, and Texas, and were ranked No. 7 going into last weekend.

The Mary Wise era, 1991–2024

Florida started volleyball again in 1984 under Marilyn McReavy, who went 156–100 in seven seasons and took the Gators to their first NCAA tournament in 1987, per the record book. Then Mary Wise arrived, and the program changed for good.

Her final line in the record book: 987–150 (.868) in 34 seasons, 522–54 in SEC regular-season play, 42–3 in SEC tournament matches, and 83–34 in the NCAA tournament. Florida won at least 20 matches every year from 1991 to 2022, 32 straight seasons, per the school’s history page.

Stretch What happened (school record book)
1991–2001 Unbeaten in SEC regular-season play in nine of 11 years; Final Fours in 1992, 1993, 1996, 1997, and 1998
2002–03 Back-to-back 16–0 SEC seasons; a Final Four in 2002 and the title match in 2003 (36–2)
2004–16 In every NCAA field, usually going out in the Round of 16 or Round of 8; 20–0 in the SEC in 2010
2017 30–2, a share of the SEC title, and a second title match
2018–24 Still in every NCAA field; Round of 8 in 2020

The two title matches. Per NCAA.com, USC beat Florida 3–1 in Dallas in 2003 to finish a 35–0 season, and Nebraska beat Florida 3–1 in Kansas City in 2017. Our Nebraska profile covers the Huskers’ side of that night, and the Final Four history primer puts both runs in context.

The coaching handoff

Florida named Ryan Theis (pronounced “TICE”) head coach on Feb. 17, 2025. Per his bio, he brought 17 seasons of head coaching experience and a 402–141 record. His background:

His first season (2025): 16–12 and 9–6 in the SEC. The Gators upset No. 3 Pitt in five sets at the AVCA First Serve in Lincoln, won at Tennessee, and kept the NCAA streak alive before losing in the Round of 32. Jaela Auguste was a third-team AVCA All-American, per the bio.

Year two so far. Florida opened 2026 in an exhibition against Nebraska at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, then went 15–2 in matches that count. The two losses were at Wisconsin in five sets on Sept. 2 and at Vanderbilt on Oct. 11. The wins include a 3–0 sweep of No. 11 Tennessee, a five-set win over No. 3 Kentucky at home, and a road sweep of the Texas schools: 3–1 at No. 19 Texas A&M and 3–2 at No. 12 Texas, per the schedule.

2026 by the numbers

These numbers come from our Daily Desk pull of NCAA.com statistics, through games on Sunday, Oct. 18, 2026 (17 matches, 62 sets for Florida). Ranks are against the 343 DI teams in that pull.

Team stat Florida Where that sits

Opponent hitting % .168 26th
Hitting differential +.115 8th
Blocks per set 2.84 13th
Kill % .420 15th

Taylor Parks S, Jr. 633 assists, 26 aces
Lily Hayes L/DS, So. 249 digs, 4.02 per set
Brooklyn Briscoe MB, Jr. 9 solo blocks, 52 block assists

The short version: Florida wins at the net. Rothe was named SEC Co-Defensive Player of the Week on Oct. 19, and against Texas the Gators out-blocked the Longhorns 13–8, per the school’s recap. Parks had a career-high 59 assists in that match, and Texas lost at home for the first time this season.

In our side-out vs. point-scoring breakdown through Oct. 19, Florida sided out 65.2% of the time and won 44.8% of its own serves. New to these numbers? Start with hitting percentage, opponent hitting % and differential, and digs, blocks, and aces.

Why Florida matters to fans

  1. The streak. Thirty-five straight NCAA tournaments is a habit, not a hot season. If Florida makes the 2026 field, it will be 36 in a row. Selection Sunday is Nov. 29; see our Selection Sunday guide.
  2. The “no banner yet” club. Florida and Louisville both have multiple title-match trips and no banner yet. Compare them with our Louisville profile.
  3. The SEC race is crowded. Kentucky, Texas A&M, Texas, and Florida have all been ranked this fall, and the Gators have beaten all three. The SEC tournament is Nov. 20–24 at Enmarket Arena in Savannah, Georgia, per the schedule. See the Kentucky, Texas A&M, and Texas profiles, plus our conference tournament guide.
  4. A coaching handoff in real time. Replacing a coach with 987 wins is one of the hardest jobs in the sport. Year two is the first real read on how Theis’s version looks.

How recruits and parents should use this page

  1. Fit over banners. Final Fours don’t create a roster spot at your position this cycle. Start with the recruiting timeline and the Eligibility Center steps.
  2. Use the official channels. Start from the Florida roster and staff page, not third-party DMs promising to “get you seen.” Our how to email a college coach guide covers the first message.
  3. Know the roster math. DI rosters at opt-in schools are capped at 18; our walk-on guide and scholarship types guide explain what that means.
  4. It’s a global roster. The 2026 roster includes players from Slovenia and Canada. Our transfer portal guide covers the other main route onto a DI roster.
  5. Ask about the system. A new staff often means a new offense and new blocking schemes. Ask how the coaches see your position fitting in for the next two or three years.
