Kill Percentage vs Hitting Percentage
Hitting percentage compresses three numbers into one:
Hit% = (K − E) / TA
That single PCT line is great for a box-score glance — and it hides the mix. Two attackers can post the same Hit% with very different kill rates and error rates. Decomposing the line answers: how often does she terminate? vs how often does she gift a point?
| Rate | Formula | Plain English |
|---|---|---|
| Kill% (kill rate) | K / TA | Share of swings that end as kills |
| Err% (attack error rate) | E / TA | Share of swings that become attack errors (including stuffs credited as E) |
| Hit% | (K − E) / TA | Net efficiency = Kill% − Err% |
So Hit% = Kill% − Err% whenever all three use the same TA denominator. Zeros (attacks that stay in play) sit in the gap: 1 − Kill% − Err%.
Source honesty: Volleyball Directory computes these from ncaa.com counting stats (K, E, TA). They are not Evollve SOS-adjusted Kill Rate / Atk Err Rate, and they are not sideout%. See Evollve RAPM & advanced stats for the third-party lens.

Why the split matters
A .250 Hit% can mean:
- High Kill% + higher Err% — aggressive terminator who also misses more
- Lower Kill% + lower Err% — steadier, fewer gifts, fewer terminations per swing
Middles often post high Kill% on fewer TA; outsides carry more volume with more zeros. Always pair rates with TA and role. Background: Hitting % explained · Box score walkthrough.
Live Fall 2026 teaching examples (ncaa.com merge)
Numbers below are from our processed Fall 2026 desk snapshot (ncaa.com leaders merge). Not invented ranks — check the Desk for the current through-games date.
| Player | Team | Hit% | Kill% | Err% | K–E–TA (approx.) | What the split shows |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Jurnee Robinson | LSU | .251 | .413 | .163 | 117–46–283 | High termination rate with a louder error share |
| Molly Creech | Miami (OH) | .254 | .359 | .105 | 99–29–276 | Nearly the same Hit% with fewer errors per swing |
| Shayla Meyer | Ole Miss | .252 | .381 | .129 | 118–40–310 | Mid Kill%/Err% mix at solid volume |
Same neighborhood Hit% (~.250–.254); different risk profiles. That is the literacy win.
Qualification floors (early season)
On the Daily Desk we use early thresholds such as ≥25 TA for Kill%/Err% columns. Full-season boards usually demand more attempts. Small samples move fast after one tournament weekend.
Related: usage / kill share
Kill share = player kills ÷ team kills. It answers how much of the team’s termination load she carries — useful next to Kill%/Hit%, and not the same as Evollve % Tm Pts Plyd. Full explainer: Usage / kill share.
