Volleyball Points Explained (PTS / PTS per Set)
On NCAA detailed boxes and ncaa.com leaderboards, PTS (points) is a scoring-contribution total — not “value,” not plus-minus, and not RAPM.
Official counting idea
NCAA point credit for an individual is typically:
PTS ≈ K + SA + BS + ½ BA
| Component | Meaning |
|---|---|
| K | Kills |
| SA | Service aces |
| BS | Block solos |
| BA | Block assists (half-point each) |
Assists, digs, and receptions do not create PTS. A libero can transform a match and still look quiet on the PTS line — that is a feature of the definition, not a judgment.
PTS/S = PTS ÷ sets played. Per-set rates help compare players with different match lengths early in the season.
How we surface it
- ncaa.com publishes Points and Points Per Set individual categories — we ingest those when present.
- When official PTS is missing but K / SA / BS / BA exist, the Daily Desk may show an ≈ approximate PTS from the formula above and label it clearly.
See live tables on the Daily Desk.
Live Fall 2026 teaching glance
From the desk snapshot (ncaa.com merge; early season — provisional):
| Player | Team | PTS | PTS/S (approx.) | Why it teaches |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Olivia Babcock | Pittsburgh | 151.5 | ~5.8 | High kill volume + block assists in the PTS mix |
| Sylvie Zgonc | South Dakota St. | 144.0 | ~5.5 | Attack-driven scoring load |
| Jurnee Robinson | LSU | 135.5 | ~6.45 | Elite early PTS/S among qualified leaders |
Always re-check the Desk for the current through-games date. These are examples, not season awards.
What PTS is good for
- Combining attack + serve + block scoring in one glance
- Spotting middles whose blocks/aces matter beyond raw kills
- Comparing scoring rate (PTS/S) when sets differ
What PTS is not
- Not MVP logic (passers/setters/liberos can be decisive without PTS)
- Not sideout% or first-ball sideout
- Not Evollve RAPM / adjusted rates — see Evollve RAPM & advanced stats
- Not a betting or odds signal — teaching site only
