Hitting Percentage Explained

Hitting percentage (also called attack percentage or hit%) is the core efficiency number on every NCAA women’s volleyball box score. It answers: when this player (or team) swung, how often did it help more than it hurt?

Formula used on NCAA forms:

PCT = (K − E) / TA

Where K = kills, E = attack errors, TA = total attack attempts. See the box score walkthrough for what counts as a kill, error, or zero attack.

What the number means in plain English

A .300 team hitting percentage over a full season is rare air. A .300 individual line on 15 attempts in one midweek match is interesting—not the same claim.

Both can be “great nights.” The middle’s .500 does not mean she was twice as valuable as the outside at .250—the outside carried far more of the offense (48 vs 20 attempts). Always pair PCT with TA (and sets played).

Middles vs outsides (and opposites)

Position (typical) Why PCT often looks different
Middle (MB) Faster tempo, shorter approach windows, often fewer TA; high PCT is common when the setter feeds clean
Outside (OH) High-volume out-of-system swings, serve-receive load, blocked more often; PCT usually lower than MB at equal “eye test”
Opposite (OPP) Can look like either—right-side attackers sometimes feast in transition or struggle in bunched blocks
Team PCT Blends all roles; best single number for “who controlled the net” in a match

Coaches and advanced tools (Volleymetrics / Evollve-style sideout splits) go deeper. For fans, the teaching rule is: compare likes to likes, and never crown a “national hitting champ” from Week 1 rates alone.

Sample-size caveats (Fall 2026 especially)

  1. Early season — A .400 on 25 attempts across two weekends is a headline, not a season. The Daily Desk flags provisional samples.
  2. Qualification — NCAA.com leaderboards apply minimums (sets/attacks). Historical pages on this site use floors such as ≥50 sets and ≥100 attacks for rate boards—see Historical Stats.
  3. Opponent mix — Hitting .280 against a top block is harder than .280 in a soft nonconference set.
  4. Zeros count in TA — Kept-in-play attacks inflate the denominator without helping K or E; that is by design.
  5. Errors include stuffed balls — A great block shows up as the attacker’s E, which is why opponent blocking and your PCT are linked stories.

How to use hit% after you watch

  1. Open the detailed box (how to read it).
  2. Sort attention: team PCT → primary attackers’ K/E/TA → opponent PCT.
  3. Ask: was the win about efficiency, error discipline, or raw kill volume?
