Exact nonconference and conference start dates vary by school and league. For 2026 Big Ten play, the conference has published a 17-match single round-robin beginning Sept. 24–25, 2026, with the regular season wrapping Nov. 17 ahead of an inaugural Big Ten Tournament (Big Ten release). NCAA Tournament framework

Division I uses a 64-team single-elimination championship. Historically the field mixes automatic qualifiers (typically one per eligible conference) and at-large selections. For recent cycles NCAA.com has described a split in the neighborhood of 31 automatic / 33 at-large—confirm the current year’s selection procedures in the official prechampionship materials.
